Poundland

In 2010, Warburg Pincus invested in Poundland. At the time of the firm’s investment, Poundland was the U.K.’s largest single price retailer selling a variety of household goods, food, health and beauty, stationary, and seasonal products with all products sold at the single price point of £1. The company sold more than 800 branded products from leading suppliers such as Colgate, PepsiCo, and Mars in addition to a variety of private label products. Poundland was an attractive investment for the firm due to its defensive and counter-cyclical characteristics, attractive store economics, and opportunity to act as a market consolidator. Throughout the firm’s investment tenure, Warburg Pincus assisted the company in evaluating M&A opportunities and advised on international expansion efforts. Warburg Pincus exited Poundland in 2016.
